Vince: The Google Update We Should Be Talking About

Many people have been ranting in the forums for the past several years about the "unfair advantage" big brands have in Google's search results. Ever since the "Vince Update" of February 2009, things have been very different in SEO. I suggest that understanding Vince is perhaps the most important way to get your SEO programs on track. Explanation on Unnatural links to your site—impacts links

Google new explanation on Unnatural links to your site—impacts links by Matt Cutts

If you see this message on the Manual Actions page, it means that Google has detected a pattern of unnatural, artificial, deceptive, or manipulative links pointing to your site. Google does not consider such links for ranking. Further more Google understand that these links may not be in control of webmaster and reject them,

Google said it is unlikely for you to see anything in that manual action section because "under 2% of domains" in the Google index "are manually removed for webspam," according to Google.
The parts of the site affected by each manual action. If a manual action affects more than 1,000 URLs or sections, only the first 1,000 matches will be displayed. You can have more detail in below video
We've just launched a nifty new Webmaster Tools feature that enables all verified site owners to see if a manual spam action has been applied to their site. - John Mueller

You can take measure to remove the bad backlinks

Google Warns Against Large-Scale Guest Posting,

Google has quietly updated the link schemes document under their Webmaster guidelines to add large-scale guest posting.
Large-scale article marketing or guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor text links
If you are guest blogging with the intent to build links, and those blog posts are done large-scale with very little quality built into them, Google may take action against the links in those articles or guest blog posts.

Mark Traphagen Rather they look for big patterns that are the footprint of those who are planting links only to manipulate a specific keyword. That's why the new guidelines say "large-scale" efforts of this type Read More
Google warns against "large scale guest posting" -- this is the beginning of many guest posting warnings, I assume. Just a tip of the ice burg. :]

Therefore we must approach a ethical blogger outreach company which must do the content marketing for branding, traffic, visibility and long term relationship

Google is now bigger than Facebook, Netflix and Twitter combined.

Deepfield cites the deployment of thousands of Google servers as the most significant change since 2010. Google Global Cache, a content delivery platform reaching more than 100 countries, now has servers in the majority of U.S. Internet providers, according to Deepfield.

An amazing 60% of all Internet end devices/users exchange traffic with Google servers during the course of an average day. When we last published some large-scale measurements in 2010, Google represented (a now seemingly small) 6% of Internet traffic. Today, Google now accounts for nearly 25% of Internet traffic on average. Only Netflix has larger bandwidth, but Netflix peaks last only for a few hours each evening during prime time hours and during Netflix cache update periods in the early morning

Google Surveys Can Make Anyone A Professional Pollster

Google’s Consumer Surveys tool. “Perhaps it won’t be long before Google, not Gallup, is the most trusted name in polling,” wrote Silver, on how Google conducted one of the most accurate polls of the 2012 election cycle.

But I didn’t know how useful they’d be for media outlets until I was able to identically replicate a non-election Gallup poll for a fraction of the cost. Last week, Gallup released an important poll on the (relatively) anti-immigration attitudes of Americans, which was one of the best pieces of evidence I had seen demonstrating why immigration reform has been so difficult to pass.

Google Confirmed There Is A Panda Update Going Out Now

Panda began going live with its latest update on July 18. Matt Cutts has previously stated that Panda updates would rollout over course of 10 days each month.

This morning, I noticed a possible Panda update was rolling out, one that seemed to be “softer” in nature than the previous updates, where many webmasters who were originally hit by the algorithm are now claiming recovery.

Google has confirmed a Panda update is rolling out and this specific update is “more finely targeted.”

Updates

Panda Update 1, Feb. 24, 2011 (11.8% of queries; announced; English in US only)
Panda Update 2, April 11, 2011 (2% of queries; announced; rolled out in English internationally)

Panda Update 20 , Sept. 27, 2012 (2.4% English queries, impacted, belatedly announced
Panda Update 21, Nov. 5, 2012 (1.1% of English-language queries in US; 0.4% worldwide; confirmed, not announced)
Panda Update 22, Nov. 21, 2012 (0.8% of English queries were affected; confirmed, not announced)

This update seems to be targeting authoritative sites – and more specifically what should be considered an authority website and what shouldn't be. There has also been a bit of chatter that sites that have fared better in this update are active in using Google+.While this latest the Google panda update seems to be of a much softer impact than we have seen from previous updates,

Bing’s Autosuggest Gets Smarter, Now Includes Brands, Movies, Animals And More

Microsoft’s Bing today announced an update to its autosuggest feature that expands the number of categories that will trigger this feature. In May, Bing first introduced this tool for celebrities, politicians, athletes and publicly available LinkedIn profiles. Today, it is adding brands, movies, albums, places, software, sport teams, animal species “and more.”

Just like in its first iteration, Bing features the ability to disambiguate searches right in the search box – before you even start a search. Say you search for “pitbull.” Bing doesn’t know if you’re searching for the dog breed or the artist, so it will give you the opportunity to explain what you’re looking for in the search box. Thanks to its Satori entity engine, which is similar in ambition to Google’s Knowledge Graph, Bing can understand the difference between the two and then show you the right search results.

Chinese Search Engine Qihoo to Buy Sogou for $1.4 Billion?

The Chinese search engine space just got a lot more interesting with Qihoo 360 reportedly purchasing Sohu's Sogou search engine. If the report from DoNews (via The Next Web) is accurate, this deal will effectively combine the second and third largest search engines in China, which could have a significant impact on Baidu's huge market share. The deal is rumored to be worth $1.4 billion. It is speculated that the deal will be announced soon. Qihoo 360 launched its own search engine in August of last year, and is second only to Baidu in terms of market share in China. Purchasing Sogou would mean the company would have nearly 25 percent of the search market share compared to Baidu's eroding market share, which is now slightly under 70 percent.

SEO: The Future of Search Results

This is how search engines currently answer questions — over a billion times each day. But what if instead of seeing 10 results, you only saw one? Sounds crazy, I know. But search is evolving and this could be its future. And it could be here a lot sooner than you think. Let’s take a look at why.
The Next Evolution of the SERP
We’re all familiar with the big algorithm updates like Panda and Penguin that happen a few times each month, but sometimes we forget that user interface changes can impact click through rate and traffic. This is important to keep in mind, as the actual look and feel of search could be changing drastically. In fact, the next evolution of the SERP could come from a new format called info cards.
While it might be difficult to fathom that info cards could replace the ubiquitous blue links, it’s actually quite plausible — especially when you consider how Google is displaying information in some of their latest products which we’ll explore below.

Understanding The Reconsideration Request via Matt Cutts

Penalized sites get removed from the SERP's. Google has been fair to such webmasters and has allowed them a way to get back into the search engine index. You do this by filing a reconsideration request. One of our writers, Ann Smarty, wrote an excellent step by step guide that shows you how to fill […]

The Dangers Associated With An Author’s Bio

In the past algorithm update of Google, a lot of traditional strategies in off-page SEO have been set aside by SEO pro to avoid penalties that websites might face in the future. Although some of these strategies are still being used by few SEO, it is not guaranteed that a website will stand out […]

Organic vs. Paid Listings: Do Users Know the Difference?

Last week, we reported on a recent calculation that showed paid search was taking over the search engine results pages (SERPs). This was experimental math by a local business owner who was concerned that organic search was dead. While organic search isn't dead, there is another facet of the SERP worth exploring and one we hear about ever so often: When presented with multiple choices, where do users click on the SERP and do they even know what they are clicking on?

Google To Take Action Against Fake Search Results Injected Into Browser History

Google made a clear stance late Friday on the Google Webmaster blog that they will not tolerate webmasters pushing deceptive search results to searchers through the use of browser history spamming techniques. The technique uses a method of detecting a click on the browser’s back button. When clicked, a user is not sent back to the page they came from, i.e. the search results, but rather a page that looks like search results. Google explained, a “users click the “back” button on their browser, they land on a new page that they’ve never visited before.” This only happens when the user is “coming from a search results page may think that they’re going back to their search results.” But “instead, they’re taken to a page that looks similar, but is actually entirely advertisements.” Read more

Google’s Schmidt: Hollywood Should Take Content Pirates To Court

A Reminder About Manipulative Or Deceptive Behavior

Our quality guidelines prohibit manipulative or deceptive behavior, and this stance has remained unchanged since the guidelines were first published over a decade ago. Recently, we’ve seen some user complaints about a deceptive technique which inserts new pages into users’ browsing histories. When users click the "back" button on their browser, they land on a new page that they've never visited before. Users coming from a search results page may think that they’re going back to their search results. Instead, they’re taken to a page that looks similar, but is actually entirely advertisements: Read More

Why the Future of The Web Rests in the Hearts and Minds of Fanatics

Google Penguin 2.0 goes Live - Discussion and Comments

We started rolling out the next generation of the Penguin webspam algorithm this afternoon (May 22, 2013), and the rollout is now complete.
- Matt Cutts
Mattcutts.com - While I do applaud your efforts to reduce webspam. The net would be so much nicer if the utter garbage affiliate spam would completely vanish.
As we all know that first update was Penguin 1 on April 24, 2012 which impacted about 3.1% of queries, after that small updates came on May 26, 2012 (less than 0.1%) and October 5, 2012 (0.3% of queries).
by SubmitShop
"Panda is sitewide. Penguin is on a per page basis. According to Cutts, Penguin 1.0 was home page only. Penguin 2.0 goes deeper." It targets lower level pages of a site and not just the top level.
Government websites, news sites and advice driven resources have all fared well from the recent update, as you would expect.
So, you may not have been penalised, or hit by the algorithm update, however you may have lost visibility to websites with more authority.

Update: Matt Cutts tweeted that you can submit feedback to Google via this form about spammy sites this update missed. https://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/337586357822169088

So unless you have managed to replace all the authority your low quality links were giving you, don’t expect to see your rankings come back. Unfortunately, any investment in low quality links is lost, and the only way back is to invest at a higher level in developing a solid SEO strategy. and removing links will give you a clean sheet but won’t bring you back.

Cutts briefly discussed the new Penguin update in a conversation with Leo Laporte on Wednesday right before it was getting ready to roll out. In that, he said, “It is a leap. It’s a brand new generation of algorithms. The previous iteration of Penguin would essentially only look at the homepage of a site. The newer generation of Penguin goes much deeper. It has a really big impact in certain small areas.”
